Since we last spoke tell us about some of the highlights you’ve enjoyed in the sport of kitesurfing?
In fact, things started in a rather fun way. I did my first freestyle competition by chance, while I was in Brazil to train, and I had no particular ambition.
It was in 2012 and I finished 3rd in a PKRA stop (some of the best riders on the tour were absent). I liked the competition game so much that I decided to get involved!
At the time I had just passed my IKO and was also working as a freelancer for Stance Kiteboarding magazine. I decided to put my heart and soul into the adventure, I gave myself the means to follow the tour, I was lucky enough to find some great sponsors who supported me for several years in a row (thanks again Duotone, Freegun, Skimp…).
Where around the world has the sport taken you and what have been some of your fondest memories in recent times?
Brazil, Venezuela, China, Philippines, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, South Africa, Caribbean… I had the chance to discover a lot of beautiful and warm countries (yes, I’m a girl who likes the sun more than the cold), it’s hard to find a better memory than another one. I just have a huge crush on Brazil, where I had the chance to go about ten times. The language, the atmosphere, the people, the conditions, the Caïpirinha… Everything I love in one place!
In terms of competition how have you been faring and are there any events you are currently training for?
I stopped competing several years ago now. At the time I was 7th on the world tour, I had a lot of great opportunities for trips, partnerships, I was really lucky. But personal reasons made me stop the tour, then I didn’t feel like training as hard anymore, I needed to refocus on things that seemed more essential. I continued to do videos, photos and trips, but more for fun than to try to perform.
As a writer and a journalist, how have you most recently been able to combine your passion for the sport with your profession of writing?
In fact, freelancing for Stance Kiteboarding was just the perfect thing to combine with my kiteboarding life. I was working remotely, I didn’t have to respect any timetable, as long as I handed in the work on time I had carte blanche and that’s just precious. It’s true that it requires rigour and organisation, and that after a day of riding, when you just want to chill, you have to take your computer to work… But let’s be honest, it was a dream job for me. I was in contact with other riders, I could write about what I was doing, I did ITWS with the people I was riding with.
And then it was also thanks to Stance Kiteboarding that I was able to evolve, when I put a pause in the competition, I had the opportunity to become the editor of the magazine, it was a new and exciting adventure that started. The Stance team really gave me the opportunity to live some crazy years, I thank them from the bottom of my heart.
Last time we spoke you mentioned that you also enjoy the sport of surfing. Has your interest and passion for this sport seen you pursue it further since the last interview?
I have to tell you a secret, surfing has dethroned kiting in my life. I think that not being able to ride at the level I used to ride has really demotivated me. So of course I still love cruising in turquoise lagoons, and doing a little strapless at home. But in terms of feeling, it’s surfing that gets me going. All my travels are conditioned by surfing, and I check more magic seaweed than windguru now ;)!
Surfing is pure freedom for me, and the icing on the cake, it is a passion that I now share with my children.
What are your biggest goals in kitesurfing for the remainder of the year and then into 2022? How do you plan to make them happen?
As I mentioned, things have changed a lot for me in recent years. I became a mother of a little boy 4 years ago and a little girl 1 year ago. My priorities have changed, but I still have a passion for travel, for the ocean, for riding… So, no more goals in kiting, just pleasure, 100%!
We’ve got into the habit of doing several trips a year as a family, 2022 will be no different, I don’t know yet where we’ll go (Greece is in my sights for the autumn), but one thing is for sure, I’ll be on the water!
Who inspires you, either from the world of sport or other areas of your life?
Back in the day I would have definitely answered a girl who lays down big stylish tricks like Colleen Carroll, today I would say all the mothers who still represent on the water ;).
