How does it feel to have your first book, Kairos, in print and for sale to the world?
Absolutely amazing! I wanted to be a writer long before I wanted to be an adventurer so this is a very happy milestone for me!
I released it on my birthday and people getting in touch to order signed copies or to say how much they love the book is definitely the best birthday present I’ve ever given myself!
Does the book cover your life as an adventurer and athlete or does it focus on particular moments and challenges which you feel have epitomised your journey as an explorer?
All of the above. I wanted to share the story of how I got here; – from the job I hated to the tentative steps taken towards a more fulfilling life…. With plenty of mishaps and mistakes along the way!
It’s packed full of adventure stories from the last 4 years of endurance challenges but it also touches upon the lessons learned along the way of carving out a less conventional career path for myself.
Is the book suitable for all kinds of people and ages or do you feel particular groups of people might be more likely to enjoy it?
I think it’s probably most appropriate to adults upwards – I wrote it with my frustrated and somewhat lost 20-something year old self in mind! However, I’d also like to think that many of the topics included, like mental resilience and optimising your mindset, are applicable to everyone – regardless of endurance ambitions.
The book is ultimately a call to action to be brave and think a little bigger – which means something different to everyone but I think we all need a nudge sometimes!
What have been some of your most shocking/scariest/exciting moments as an explorer and are any of these included in the book?
My first adventure, kayaking the Volga River in Russia, is certainly my most controversial and in terms of
shock value, no other trip has since come close! That’s included in the book but most importantly for me, I’ve
been able to provide a more balanced account of it than was possible at the time. Like any good adventure,
the book is peppered with plenty of unexpected plot twists throughout though!
Do you enjoy writing and do you see yourself being involved in future writing projects and books?
Absolutely! I really enjoy storytelling through my talks and I regularly write articles and blogs but it’s been
wonderful to level up to a book! As long as I have more adventure stories to tell, I’ll be writing more!
In terms of adventure, what’s next on the radar and how hard are you currently training and working to make things keep happening?
My immediate focus is on various community projects, talks, school visits and public fitness events to help spread a little adventure mischief and to encourage others to get outside more! In terms of training, I’m an ambassador for F45 Stratford in London so in between building some miles back into my legs through running and cycling, that wonderful team are helping me build up a solid base of strength and conditioning – important for injury prevention.
The next adventure is top secret… for now!
