PRO SURFER Bevan Willis started out in the sport at the age of nine and has gone on to fill much of his early potential already. He cites being made captain of the South African junior surfing team as one of his biggest achievements in surfing to date.
We caught up with Bevan to talk all about surfing and find out more about his journey in the sport so far.
When did you start surfing and who were your biggest supporters and mentors in the sport at the beginning?
I started surfing when I was nine and my parents are still are my biggest supporters and my mentor was my coach Quinton Jones and he still is one of them.
Tell us about where you live and the opportunities it gives you to surf on a daily basis?
I live in a beach town called Umdloti on the north coast of Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa and I ride my scooter to the beach which is 2km away.
What have been you biggest successes in the sport to date?
Being made captain of the South African junior surfing team for 2016.
Where in the country and world has the sport taken you and what have been some of the highlights?
Surfing has taken me across our country and to Azores and Portugal, the highlights have been wsl u20 world champs and ISA world champs and seeing different things and surfing in incredible places.
Tell us about the surfing community and how being involved in it has helped shape who you are as a person?
Our surfing community is relaxed and calm and I feel accepted by them and have made a lot of friends.
What are your goals and ambitions in the sport for the year ahead and beyond?
I would like to travel next year doing the qualifying series as i finish grade 12 and I would love to qualify for the Championship tour.
