JARRYD Salem and Alesha Bradford met in a backpackers’ hostel in Vancouver. They left that hostel travelling together and haven’t stopped their whirlwind adventure since.
Jarryd had always had a passion for writing while Alesha’s love had been for photography. The two therefore decided to combine their creative talents and start a blog dedicated to travel and adventure.
The site, www.nomadasaurus.com, offers an insight into the pair’s experiences around the world and also contains a wealth of information even the seasoned backpackers would find useful.
When did you first meet and how long was it until you started travelling the world together? What was the inspiration behind the idea?
We met in a hostel in Vancouver, Canada, and we were already travelling solo for a year before that. We had both been fascinated with the world when we were younger and hit the road as soon as we could after school. After we met we travelled Canada together living out of a van, and haven’t stopped exploring since.
When did you decide to combine your talents of photography and writing and start the blog and what was it like when it first went live?
I’ve always been into writing and Alesha always loved photography, but we were both complete amateurs. At the beginning of 2014 we started a multi-year trip through Asia and decided to start a blog to keep in touch with friends and family, and to give us motivation to improve our writing and photography. When it first went live it was completely basic, and our photos were horrible. We’re very proud of the improvements we’ve made over the years being self-taught.
What is it about your writing and photos that you think has gained you so many followers and drawn so many people to the blog?
Alesha’s photography has constantly improved and she’s put a focus on highlighting destinations and people rather than ourselves, like a lot of other couple influencers, and I think that brought in followers in the early days. I would write experiential stories as well from the random places we would go, which opened up a new part of the world to many people.
What would you say has been your highlight of your travels to date?
Visiting Antarctica with One Ocean Expeditions was by far the best highlight of our travels to date, followed by exploring Hang Son Doong, the largest cave in the world, in Vietnam.
What has been one of the most scariest moments?
Surviving a head-on bus crash in Myanmar.
As you’ve grown you’ve recruited others to join you in the work? Who are they and what skills do they bring to the outfit?
We have a few different people working for us at the moment. We have two assistants whohelp with social media, editing and email management and a few writers who create content for us from places we haven’t personally been.
Tell us about other resources on the blog as well as services you offer including photography?
Our blog is used as a portfolio and provides free information from around the world, but some of the services we offer commercially include photography, videography, content creation, social media management, destination marketing, SEO and brand ambassadorships.
Where are you currently and where are you heading to next?
We’re currently in Sydney, Australia, and are heading to Kyrgyzstan in August to run our two adventure and photography tours.
